Medu Vadai || Urad Dal vada
Medu vada/Urad dal(black lentils) vada is a popular South Indian snack served mostly with breakfast and lunch recipes. Medu vada is deep fried snack made with lentils, herbs and spices.
Medu vada/Urad dal vadas are healthy and tasty snack made with simple ingredients. Medu vadas are crispy, soft and fluffy. It can be served with chutney or tiffin sambar.
Ingredients:
Urad dal-1 cup
Rice flour-1tbsp
Whole pepper-1 tsp
Green chilies-3
Curry leaves-few
Salt-as needed
Water-1/2 cup
Cumin seeds-1 tsp
Ginger-1 tsp(shredded)
Oil-200 ml
Method:
- Soak a cup of urad dal for 3-4 hrs and grind it to coarse paste. Sprinkle required water and grind for 30 seconds. Urad dal batter should be thick like a paste.
- Add rice flour and other ingredients into the vada paste. Add required salt and mix well.
- Heat required oil in a pan and keep it ready for frying vada.
- Dip your fingers in water and take a small portion of batter and make a ball shape. Slightly flatten the ball and make a hole in the center.
- Add vadas one by one into hot oil. Deep fry the vadas. Flip to other side and fry again. Once vada turns golden brown take it out and transfer to a plate.
- Serve medu vada with coconut chutney, and tiffin sambar
Note:
- Soak Urad dal for atleast 4-5 hrs. Soaking dal for 4-5 hours makes the vada fluffy and batter quantity will be more.
- Don’t soak urad dal for long time. While frying it absorbs lot of oil.
