Sweet Pongal || Sarkarai Pongal



Sweet pongal is a traditional South Indian recipe made on festive occasions especially on Makara sankaranthi(Harvest festival). After making sweet pongal it is offered to Sun god for thanksgiving. 

Pongal festival is celebrated in the month of January every year. Sweet pongal/Sakarai pongal is made with rice, jaggery, milk, spices and ghee. 

Pongal is a onepot dessert which is protein rich and healthy food. Kalkandu pongal, paal pongal, venpongal are other pongal recipes made in different way. Here goes the recipe of  sweet pongal..

Ingredients:
Raw rice-1 cup
Ghee-3 tbsp
Moong dal-1/4 cup
Jaggery-150gms
Coconut shredded/slices-2 tbsp
Cashew nuts-10
Dry grapes-10
Cardamom-3
Edible camphor-a pinch

Method:

  • In a pressure cooker add rice, Moong dal with 2 glass of water, 1 glass of milk and cook for 3 whistles and keep aside.
  • In a sauce pan, add jaggery pieces and half a cup of water and melt it to slightly thick consistency.
  • Heat 3 tbsp of ghee in a frying pan. Add cashews, raisins and fry till golden brown. 
  • In the same pan add shredded coconut and roast till aroma comes and slightly changes it’s color. Turn off the stove and keep aside. 
  • Mash the pressure cooked rice, Moong dal mixture with a masher or laddle. Add in the jaggery syrup, nuts and raisins, cardamom, and mix well. 
  • Cook it in simmer for 5 minutes until rice absorbs jaggery well. Add edible camphor, roasted coconut and mix well. Serve hot.
