Chickpea Curry | Kadalai Curry | Sundal Kuzhambu | Chickpeas Curry

Chickpea curry is a delicious and flavorful South Indian vegetarian curry. Chickpeas, commonly known as channa, are highly nutritious and naturally gluten-free.

Chickpeas are rich in dietary fiber and protein and contain healthy fats that help support overall health. They are available in two main varieties: white channa and black channa (kaala channa). In Tamil, chickpeas are called kondakadalai or sundal, and kuzhambu means curry.

Chickpeas are one of the special dishes prepared during festivals like Vinayagar Chathurthi and Navarathri. This chickpea curry, also known as sundal kuzhambu, can be made using either white or black channa. Both taste great and are equally healthy.

Channa curry tastes different from place to place depending on the cooking method. In my home, I prepare chickpea curry in many different ways. This version is made with onions, tomatoes, spices, coconut, chickpeas, and vegetables.

The curry can be prepared with or without coconut, but this coconut-based version is especially flavorful.

The spices and fresh ingredients are roasted and cooked slowly, and the aroma of freshly ground masala adds a wonderful depth of flavor to the curry.

Ingredients:

Chickpeas (white or black channa) – 100 g
Big onions – 2
Tomato – 1
Ginger-garlic paste – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – few
Curry masala – 2 tbsp
Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
Coconut slices – 4
Potato – 2
Fennel seeds – 1 tbsp
Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
Salt – as needed
Oil – 3 tbsp

Method
  • Wash and soak the chickpeas overnight. Pressure cook the soaked chickpeas with salt and enough water for 3 whistles. Allow the pressure to release naturally and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan and sauté the roughly chopped onions and tomato until they turn soft.
  • Switch off the flame and add coriander powder, curry masala, turmeric powder, fennel seeds, and coconut slices.
  • Mix well and allow it to cool. Grind this mixture into a smooth paste.
  • Heat oil in another pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add curry leaves and ginger-garlic paste, and sauté for a few seconds until the raw smell disappears.
  • Add the cooked chickpeas along with the cooking water. Add the ground masala paste and mix well. Add water if required.
  • Add chopped potatoes and cook on medium flame for 10 minutes until the curry thickens and the raw smell of the masala goes away.
  • Switch off the flame and serve hot.
