Black-eyed peas/Lobia curry



Black-eyed bean is known in various names as black-eyed peas, Cowpea and China Pea. This bean is originally from Africa. 

The name cowpea, as it is used in animal food. Black-eyed bean is rich in protein, fiber and vitamin A. 

In the American South, eating this black-eyed peas and greens on New Year’s day is considered good luck.




Ingredients:
Big onion-1
Ripe tomatoes-2
Ginger garlic paste-1 tsp
Green chilies-2
Garam masala powder -1 tsp
Cumin powder-1 tsp
Kashmiri red chilly powder-1 tsp
Coriander powder-1 tsp
Amchur powder-1/2 tsp
Black eyed bean-1 cup
Mustard & Urad dal-1/2 tsp
Curry leaves-few
Coriander leaves-few
Salt-as needed
Turmeric powder-1 tsp
Oil-2tbsp


Method:

  • Soak black eyed beans for 3-4 hours and pressure cook with a glass of water, turmeric powder for 3 whistles and mash it well & keep aside.
  • In a pan add some oil and heat it. Then add mustard, urad dal. Once it sputter, add onion, green chilies, ginger garlic paste, curry leaves and saute well. 
  • Now add tomatoes, spice powders & salt. Add cooked & mashed bean into the gravy and mix with spatula. 
  • Add required water and allow it to cook for another 2 minutes and garnish with coriander leaves. Serve hot with chapathi & rice.
